3 Pine Belt organizations awarded funding through Dollar General Literacy Foundation

    August 22, 2024

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WDAM) – Three Pine Belt organizations have received more than $10,000, in total, in youth literacy grants through Dollar General’s Literacy Foundation.

On Tuesday, DGLF announced the award of nearly $75,000 in youth literacy grants to nonprofits, libraries and schools in the Magnolia State.

Below are the three Pine Belt organizations that have been awarded funding and the amount they will receive.

    City Organization Name Grant Amount
Collins Boys And Girls Club of Covington County Inc. $4,000
Hattiesburg United Way of Southeastern Mississippi $4,000
Purvis Purvis Middle School Library $2,600

The list of all of the recipients in the state, along with a comprehensive list, can be found online HERE.

The funds are part of more than $4 million recently awarded nationwide for recipients to use to buy books, technology, equipment or materials to help K-12 excel.

“We understand investing in youth literacy means investing in the future of students and our collective communities,” said DGLF Executive Director Denine Toor. “Through these grants, we hope to enhance the programs’ efforts to foster students’ critical thinking skills, creativity and confidence so they can unlock their potential and achieve their dreams.”

DGLF said the Mississippi grants are expected to positively impact the lives of more than 8,000 individuals in the state.

Applications for the 2025 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant cycle supporting youth, family, summer and adult literacy programs will be available online in January 2025. The foundation said the grants aim to support schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center in putting together initiatives or expanding existing ones.

DGLF is also hosting its fifth annual Yellow Glasses Project through Sept. 8 (or while supplies last), “to shine an additional light” on literacy, according to the foundation. Customers can buy yellow sunglasses at Dollar General stores for $2 each, and all proceeds benefit the foundation.
