Rack Run 5k race raises funds for breast cancer patients

    October 13, 2024

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Over 350 people registered for the Rack Run 5k race in support of breast cancer awareness.

The event was hosted by Team Breast Friends, a nonprofit that provides funds to breast cancer patients to help them pay for their treatments.

“We will send a check to the Breast Cancer patient to help them overcome any stress caused by money,” race organizer, Patty Frantz said.

Many of the runners were breast cancer survivors or people running in support of friends or family.

“We have had friends that have died of breast cancer. So we’re out here to support people and just help raise money,” runner Peyton Gray said.

The Pink Heals Eastern Iowa fire truck was also at the race and was signed by all the breast cancer survivors. It’s part of a nation-wide charity that supports cancer patients. Breast cancer survivor Diana Bramow, brought the firetruck for other survivors to sign.

“Having a truck show up in your honor and then them asking you to sign that truck so that your name can go everywhere they go, it’s pretty therapeutic,” Bramow said.

Even people who are still battling breast cancer were at the Rack Race. Team Breast Friends board member Stef Swails said she talked to a survivor close to finishing her treatments.

“She’s a 2 month out survivor. She just finished her chemotherapy this week. And she came and she had the biggest, brightest, smile. And that’s what it’s all about, just helping people,” Swails said.
