Judge denies motion to reduce accused murderer’s bond

    October 28, 2024

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Judge Eddy Coleman denied MK McKinney’s request for a bond reduction.

MK McKinney was charged with the murder of Amber Spradlin and eight counts of complicity to tampering with physical evidence.

His attorney recently filed the request for a bond reduction, saying McKinney is not a flight risk and the $5 million bond is excessive.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner later said evidence gathered by investigators “strongly implicates Defendant M.K. McKinney in the murder of Amber Spradlin.”

McKinney’s motion for a reduction was heard during a court appearance Thursday, with Judge Eddy Coleman saying he would make a ruling during the weekend. Court documents show Coleman denied the request for a bond reduction Monday.

“Murder is a capital offense, the most serious classification of crime in this Commonwealth, whether the death penalty is available or not,” Judge Coleman said in his ruling. “Looking at the allegations as argued by the parties and supported by exhibits to their briefs, it is a finding of this court that the current bail set by the court is reasonable, and, accordingly, the Defendant’s Motion to Reduce Bond is DENIED.”

Dr. Michael McKinney and Josh Mullins were also each charged with eight counts of complicity to tampering with physical evidence.

No trial date has been set, but the three men are expected back in court on Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
