US spot Bitcoin ETFs had a rough October stretch. Investors pulled $228.6 million from the funds over the five trading days ending October 16, 2026.
That brings month-to-date net outflows to roughly $615 million, with some tallies putting the figure closer to $618 million.
These funds have become the main on-ramp for institutional money into Bitcoin. When the exits outpace the entrances, people notice.
Where the money went
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) led the retreat. The fund saw approximately $165 million leave during the week, including $71.8 million on October 16 alone.
Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) also posted outflows on October 16. Its share was smaller, at $10.6 million.
The sharpest single-day hit landed on October 7, when outflows peaked at $487.1 million. That one session represents a large chunk of the entire month’s net damage so far.
Trading activity stayed busy throughout. Daily volume across the funds exceeded $2 billion on various sessions during October.
The bigger picture since January 2024
US spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024, and cumulative inflows since then have reached approximately $56.88 billion.
Total assets under management across the funds stood at $104.29 billion as of mid-October. The month’s outflows represent well under 1% of that figure.
The funds collectively hold roughly 1.276 million BTC.
Every share redeemed can require an issuer to reduce its Bitcoin holdings or its cash position. So outflows are not just an accounting entry. They can translate into actual selling in the underlying market.
What this means for the market
With IBIT and FBTC leading redemptions, the largest and most institutionally oriented products are where the exits are concentrated.
The outflows do not necessarily mean institutions have lost faith in Bitcoin. A week of redemptions can reflect rebalancing, profit-taking, or shifting allocations across a broader portfolio, rather than a verdict on the asset itself.
The October 7 session deserves attention. A $487.1 million single-day exit shows how quickly sentiment can swing, and how much money can move in one direction when it does.
The sustained trading volume above $2 billion on multiple sessions is worth tracking alongside the flow data. Engagement remains high, which means the funds are still a central venue for Bitcoin exposure, even when the net direction is negative.
The key data points to watch are whether IBIT’s redemptions slow or accelerate, whether the month-to-date total climbs meaningfully beyond the $618 million mark, and how the funds’ combined holdings of roughly 1.276 million BTC hold up.
