Bitcoin ETFs vs Direct Bitcoin Ownership: Key Differences

    October 28, 2026

    1. What is the main difference between Bitcoin ETFs and direct Bitcoin ownership?

Bitcoin ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin’s price through traditional brokerage accounts without directly holding cryptocurrency. Direct Bitcoin ownership allows investors to transfer, spend, and control their Bitcoin, particularly when using a self-custody wallet.

    2. How much money is invested in US spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2026?

According to SoSoValue, US spot Bitcoin ETFs held approximately USD 103.22 billion in total net assets as of October 27, 2026. Their cumulative historical net inflows reached USD 57.32 billion, with daily net inflows of USD 24.54 million on October 27.

    3. Are Bitcoin ETFs more expensive than buying Bitcoin directly?

Bitcoin ETFs generally charge annual management fees, with BlackRock’s IBIT charging 0.25% and Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust charging 0.15%. Direct Bitcoin ownership avoids recurring ETF management fees but may involve exchange commissions, blockchain transaction fees, withdrawal charges, and hardware wallet costs.

    4. Is direct Bitcoin ownership safer than investing in Bitcoin ETFs?

Bitcoin ETFs rely on institutional custodians to safeguard the underlying cryptocurrency, reducing the need for investors to manage private keys themselves. Direct self-custody provides greater control but also introduces risks associated with lost recovery phrases, compromised wallets, and unauthorized transactions.

    5. Can investors trade Bitcoin ETFs and directly owned Bitcoin at any time?

Bitcoin ETFs generally trade during regular securities exchange hours, meaning investors cannot immediately execute ETF transactions when stock markets are closed. Direct Bitcoin can be traded around the clock through cryptocurrency exchanges, including weekends and holidays, although liquidity and transaction costs may vary.
