Passage of GO Bond 3 would provide $1 million to UNM-Los Alamos: UNM Newsroom

    October 28, 2024

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) will receive $1 million to plan, construct, renovate and equip campus facilities and infrastructure if New Mexico’s General Obligation Bond 3 passes during the Nov. 5 general election.

“The aging infrastructure on our campus desperately needs renovations in order to meet current ADA standards and to increase energy efficiency in our facilities,” UNM-LA Chancellor Mike Holtzclaw said.

The cost of the recently completed Building 6 renovation was more than three times the original estimate due to supply chain issues. Money designated for other building updates was moved to pay for the increase, leaving those structures in further need of improvements. The money from Bond 3 would go back to those buildings.

A specific project example is new paint, lighting and carpet, and the modernization of the bathrooms in the basement of Building 7.

General obligation bonds are the only source of funding available for many institutions to renovate buildings, keep facilities safe, upgrade technology and provide a quality education that moves New Mexico’s economy forward.

Bond 3 would distribute almost $230 million to public colleges, universities and specialty schools, including the UNM-LA campus.
