ST.JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – A Northeast Kingdom nonprofit is trying to lend a helping hand to those recovering from flooding last month.
Locally Social Gives Inc. has already raised over $100,000 for flood recovery. The organization says they wanted to get involved because many people who have been hit by the storms have not yet received financial assistance from FEMA or the state.
The Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, along with many other organizations, helped raise the money and plan to roll out awards of up to $1,500 for those in need.
“We need help on a very big scale. We’re gonna do our part as a nonprofit to help the people where $1,500 can make a difference. But on these ones that are looking at a $100,000, $50,000, $150,000. What are they supposed to do? I guess we’re just trying to do all we can to run our mouths,” said the organization’s Cari Carlet.
She says they have received applications from 11 towns so far. The group is also working with the Caledonia County Fair Association to distribute proceeds from their flood recovery effort.
