Every fund is positive year-to-date with 11 funds posting double digit returns for 2025. - Emil Michael, the Pentagon’s undersecretary for research and engineering and chief technology officer, has taken on an additional role as acting director of the Defense Innovation Unit. Michael took over the commercial innovation hub after Doug Beck, who led DIU since 2023, resigned from the role. It is unclear why Beck stepped down or who will take over as the hub’s permanent director. Michael Dodd, who was recently nominated to be assistant secretary of defense for critical technologies, has been tapped as the DIU’s acting deputy director. Beck’s exit adds to a growing wave of departures among senior Pentagon leaders.
- A whistleblower’s complaint at the Social Security Administration is drawing more scrutiny. The Data Foundation is calling on SSA’s inspector general and other watchdogs to investigate claims that a former DOGE official put the data of more than 300 million Americans at risk. The agency’s chief data officer filed a whistleblower complaint about the incident. He said he involuntarily resigned from the agency last Friday.
- Commerce Department unions employees are suing the Trump administration over its latest rollback of collective bargaining rights. The Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute allows the president to bar federal employees from collectively bargaining if they primarily work in national security. But groups representing employees at the Patent and Trademark Office and the National Weather Service say few, if any, of their members primarily work in national security. The groups say they were only added to the list of collective bargaining rollbacks because they have pushed back on the Trump administration’s polices targeting the federal workforce.
- Army soldiers flagged the same issues that have long plagued military housing in the first-ever barracks survey. The Army recently surveyed more than 93,000 soldiers living in 785 unaccompanied housing buildings across 46 installations. Soldiers gave barracks a “below average” score, citing problems such as mold, pest infestations, security and privacy concerns, and outdated or poorly maintained facilities. They also said maintenance requests often take weeks or even months to complete. The Army said installations will develop action plans based on resident feedback within 60 days of receiving the results.
