HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In a significant milestone, the University of Hawaii is celebrating a record-breaking $615.7 million in extramural funding for research and innovation projects.
For the third year in a row, the school has topped half a billion dollars in funds for research.
The projects that receive funding all aim to impact and improve the quality of life across Hawaii and beyond.
The money comes from investments from agencies that support the school’s research efforts, like the state and Hawaii’s congressional delegation.
“The dollar amount matters, but its also about what we spend the money on,” Sen. Brian Schatz said. “It’s climate action, climate adaptation, science in the context of culture, Native Hawaiian health and education, ocean conservation.”
The extramural funds are estimated to generate $947 million in total business sales, $434 million in employee earnings and $53 million in state tax revenue.
It currently supports over 10,000 jobs.
