SBI Mutual Fund launches AI chatbot ‘SmartAssist’ for WhatsApp-based investing

    July 2, 2025

SBI Mutual Fund has launched SmartAssist, an AI-powered conversational assistant on WhatsApp. The tool aims to make mutual fund investing simple and accessible through a chat-based interface.

SmartAssist allows users to perform tasks such as starting a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP), checking their portfolio, comparing funds, and resuming investments—all within WhatsApp. The service is available 24/7 and uses natural language processing (NLP) to understand and respond to user queries.

“SmartAssist brings the power of AI directly to our investors,” said Nand Kishore, MD & CEO, SBI Mutual Fund. He added that the initiative is part of the company’s broader push to enhance customer experience through technology.

The chatbot offers information in a conversational format, helping users understand mutual fund basics and manage their investments without navigating websites or apps. Visual cues within the chat aim to simplify complex financial concepts.

Srinivas Jain, Executive Director and Chief of Strategy, Digital & Technology at SBI Mutual Fund, said the service goes beyond basic chat support. “SmartAssist is a full-cycle investment companion built to provide an intuitive and enriched experience,” he said.

Currently available in English, SmartAssist will soon support regional languages to reach a wider audience. With WhatsApp’s wide user base in India, the tool is expected to improve access to digital investing across the country.

Users can get started by sending a message to SBI Mutual Fund’s official WhatsApp number and following on-screen prompts.

The assistant continues to evolve and improve based on user feedback and real-world interactions.
