superior bathhouse brewery review in hot springs

    July 28, 2024

Our recent visit to the Superior Bathhouse Brewery in Hot Springs revealed a place that embodies the very essence of the city. This brewery is not just about beer; it encapsulates the unique mixture of history, creativity, innovation, and ambition found in Hot Springs. As the owner, Rose Schweikhart, aptly puts it, “We are Hot Springs on tap.” This sentiment resonates deeply with anyone who steps into this magical place.

Historical emergence of superior bathhouse brewery

The Superior Bathhouse has a storied past that dates back to 1916 when it was launched as a bathhouse. For nearly seven decades, it served as a therapeutic hub before closing its doors in 1983. The facility remained vacant for 30 years, gradually falling into disrepair along with other abandoned bathhouses on Bathhouse Row.

A transformative decision by the park system opened a new chapter for these historic buildings. Leasing them to private investors, the system allowed for necessary changes while maintaining structural integrity. Rose Schweikhart seized this opportunity and, in 2014, converted the Superior Bathhouse into a brewery. Her discovery of the thermal springs’ natural temperature and pH being ideal for beer making set the foundation for something extraordinary.

Today, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery holds two unique distinctions : it is the only brewery in a national park and the first in the world to utilize natural mineral water in its brewing process. This innovative approach has helped it become one of the most popular spots for dining and drinking in Hot Springs.

    A diverse beer selection

The beer selection at the Superior Bathhouse Brewery is nothing short of impressive. With 18 different beers available, every visitor is likely to find a brew they enjoy. The core lineup is always available, featuring a variety of flavors to suit different palates. Additionally, the brewery frequently introduces seasonal and experimental brews that keep the experience fresh and exciting.

If you’re indecisive about which beer to try, the brewery offers a perfect solution—a beer flight. You can choose four beers, each served in 4-ounce tester cups. For the ultimate tasting experience, opt for the beer bath, which includes samples of all 18 beers. Though the brewery does not can or bottle its beer, you can still take your favorite brew home by filling a growler. For those who aren’t fans of beer or don’t consume alcohol, the homemade root beer is a delicious alternative, praised for its exceptional taste.

    Gastronomic delights at the brewery

Beyond its renowned beers, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery also excels in its culinary offerings. The menu features pub fare with a distinctive southern twist, ensuring a flavorful experience for all guests.

A must-try is the pretzel paired with the beer cheese dip, a combination that perfectly blends soft, warm, and salty notes. Other standout appetizers include the pimento cheese dip with tortilla chips and the fried cauliflower served with buffalo sauce.

Among the main courses, the Bathhouse Burger stands out, particularly the Fire Ant variation, known for its juicy, flavorful, and spicy profile. For those preferring milder flavors, the Rose’s Burger with onion bacon jam and gouda cheese is highly recommended. Each dish is meticulously prepared, contributing to a delightful dining experience.

A captivating atmosphere and exceptional service

The ambiance at the Superior Bathhouse Brewery is lively and inviting. The building features large windows that offer scenic views of the town, enhancing the overall dining experience. Guests can choose between sitting at a table or the long bar that runs along the windows. There is also a spacious patio with umbrella-shaded tables, reminiscent of a beer garden. This outdoor seating area allows guests to enjoy their beers while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Hot Springs.

Service at the brewery is handled by an amiable and knowledgeable staff, contributing significantly to the enjoyable experience. Their friendly demeanor and expertise ensure that every visit is memorable. The self-service nature of the patio area provides a relaxed and casual dining environment. Guests can seat themselves, peruse the menu, and place their orders inside.

In conclusion, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery is a quintessential stop for anyone visiting Hot Springs, Arkansas. Its blend of historical charm, innovative brewing techniques, diverse beer selection, and delicious pub fare make it a destination worth visiting. If you ever find yourself in Hot Springs, do not miss the opportunity to explore this gem. A visit to the Superior Bathhouse Brewery promises an experience you will treasure.
