Taste Test: Blueberry muffin from Sips Espresso | Eat & Drink

    July 10, 2024

During the scorching temperatures in Athens this summer, many people seek refreshing treats at coffee shops around town, such as Sips Espresso. I visited Sips to try their blueberry muffin.

The muffin flavors rotate frequently, and I tried this classic and timeless breakfast staple. The muffin, served at a cool temperature, was dense and fluffy without sacrificing substance. On the top, there was a sweet, soft crumb-like texture that provided a satisfying topping to the inner layer of fluff. The fresh blueberries were plump, tart and evenly distributed throughout the muffin.

After I finished the top layer, the rest of the muffin melted in my mouth. The blueberries inside the muffin were not too mushy, but neither too round and hard. The soft inside and the fresh blueberries with a bit of crunch reminded me of a southern blueberry cobbler. The bottom of the muffin was a light shade of brown, leading me to think it would be baked as perfectly as the top of the muffin, but instead, it was a little dry and lacked the same sweet flavors that the top and center had.

Overall, the muffin tasted fresh, which was a pleasant surprise as it was noon on a blazing hot day. However, I would have preferred the pastry to be warmed up. I don’t think any muffin is worth five dollars, but it was satisfying for a breakfast food from a cafe, compared to other coffee spots in Athens such as Jittery Joes or Starbucks.
