Local Government Commission approves several bonds for SENC projects

    August 9, 2024

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) -This week, the Local Government Commission gave the green light to several bonds that will help fund projects in Southeastern North Carolina.

The commission approved $68 million in limited obligation bonds for Pender County to build a new law enforcement center. The center will include a detention center, the sheriff’s office, the 911 operations center, and an evidence storage facility.

The Local Government Commission (LGC) has approved $37.5 million in limited obligation bonds for various projects in New Hanover County. These projects include the construction of a new library on Northchase Parkway, two fire stations in Castle Hayne and the Gordon Road area, an ammunition warehouse, an office/classroom building at the Sheriff’s Department firing range, and a roof replacement at the county Senior Center.

The town of Wallace can now move forward with the rehabilitation project for Maple Creek Pump Station. The commission approved a $1.8 million revolving loan that will help replace the existing pipes. According to the agenda document, the town “anticipates a 8.5% increase in water and sewer rates from the current fiscal year through the end of the project construction in FY2025.”

The commission also accepted the merger of Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) and the Town of Wrightsville Beach water and sewer systems. The supporting document from the agenda detailed that CFPUA and the Town of Wrightsville Beach completed a Utility Consolidation Agreement (interlocal agreement) on June 21, 2024. However, the merger is expected to take place on September 30, 2025.

You can find the full link to the agenda here.
