BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont senator peter welch says congress will likely pass additional funding for FEMA to help flood stricken Vermonters. But he says bigger reforms to FEMA could take time.
This week, President Joe Biden approved Vermont’s disaster declaration from this summer’s floods which opens the door to FEMA aid for homeowners.
But Vermont Sen. Peter Welch says too much is being spent on administration, and has a bill to reform how FEMA pays local communities for disasters.
At the Democratic National Convention this week, Sen. Welch told Channel 3 News that Congress will likely extend FEMA funds. But he says changing how FEMA funds natural disasters will be a long term project.
“FEMA has to be concerned about accountability and that’s fair but we cant let excessive concern about accountability get in the way of accomplishment,” Sen. Welch said.
The disaster declaration will allow people in Chittenden, Essex, Lamoille, Orleans and Washington counties access individual aid.
