Edison receives $1M in federal funds to expand community center

Officials this week announced $1 million in federal community project funding to expand the Minnie B. Veal Community Center (MBVCC) and enhance services for Edison’s seniors.

Currently, the MBVCC is not equipped to meet the needs of Edison’s seniors. The only dedicated senior center in town, and constructed in the 1990s, MBVCC is located in the southeast section, making it harder to serve the municipality’s growing senior population due to limited space and location.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-6th District, secured the funding. The project will help transform MBVCC into a one-stop hub for Edison’s senior residents where they can engage in wellness programs, social gatherings, educational programming and classes, recreational activities and more. The money comes via the federal Fiscal Year 2025 annual spending bill.

During an Aug. 26 press conference, officials noted the expansion will also introduce vital technology education programs for seniors. Pallone said the project will truly make a difference in the lives of Edison’s seniors.

“This expansion isn’t just about adding more space – it’s about creating a welcoming place where our seniors can feel supported and connected,” said Pallone. “With easier access to essential services, and the opportunity to learn new skills and form lasting friendships – we’re helping to build a community that values and uplifts its older residents.”

Edison Mayor Sam Joshi thanked Pallone for his support of the project and for securing the funding.

“Our cherished senior population will benefit immensely from the addition of more space, services, and engagement opportunities,” said Joshi. “With this funding, this central location can ensure the continued enrichment within our senior community.”
