ETFs Poured $28 Million Into XRP As Price Dropped

    August 28, 2026

XRP spot ETFs just logged their strongest single day of inflows in over seven months, yet the price kept falling and leveraged longs were getting wiped out simultaneously. Those two facts are not supposed to happen together, and the explanation…

XRP spot ETFs took in $28.14 million in net inflows on Aug. 26, 2026, described as the strongest single day in more than seven months, according to Coinpedia. On the same day, the wrapper that houses much of that flow is falling. The Bitwise XRP ETF (NYSE:XRP) traded at $15.64 as of 12:13 p.m. ET on Aug. 28, 2026, down 4.1% from a previous close of $16.31, and the pullback is still underway as this publishes. XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) the token is around $1.42 to $1.46 as of Aug. 28, with our live rate reading $1.3998 at 16:17:45 UTC. Figures here are accurate as of publish time and move quickly. The question is whether a seven-month high in ETF flows, recorded on a red day, actually signals demand.

What an ETF Inflow Number Actually Measures

A spot ETF is a fund that holds the underlying asset and issues shares against it. Net inflow is the daily balance of primary-market creations (new shares issued when authorized participants deliver cash or the asset) minus redemptions. Aggregators such as Coinpedia, SoSoValue and Farside publish the number the next morning. The bullish read is straightforward: a positive inflow number means the wrapper absorbed more coin than it released, so somewhere upstream a desk had to source XRP to back new shares.

That is the read. It is not the whole picture.

Why the $28 Million Inflow Is Weaker Than It Sounds

First, scale. $28.14 million is a modest sum in ETF terms. Calling it a seven-month high describes how quiet the previous seven months were, not how large this session was. Total XRP ETF inflows near $1.62 billion since launch is the cumulative context, and one day at this pace does not change the trajectory.

Second, attribution. ETF flow data does not identify the buyer. Anyone with a brokerage account, retail investor, advisor or institution, buys the same shares. Treating a positive inflow as “institutional demand” is a claim the data cannot support.

Third, mechanism. Over $20 million in leveraged long positions were liquidated alongside the move. A liquidation is a forced sale: when a leveraged position moves against a trader, the exchange closes it automatically regardless of intent. That selling stops once the leveraged longs are gone, which looks identical on a chart to a sentiment reversal but is not one. And the blind spot behind every ETF flow number is that most XRP price discovery still happens inside spot order books on Binance, Coinbase and Upbit. A positive wrapper inflow with a falling price simply means sellers off the wrapper overwhelmed the wrapper bid.

What Would Actually Turn XRP Around

Flows move price. A durable turn needs sustained multi-week ETF inflows at a higher run-rate than a single $28.14 million session, spot volume expansion on the major venues, and a reclaim of the level traders are watching near $1.66, where the token was rejected. Coinpedia also flags that XRP “rich list” tier thresholds have been rising in recent weeks, which is often read as whale accumulation. Decompose it: rising thresholds can reflect price movement and wallet reshuffling, and large wallets often belong to exchanges holding customer funds rather than individual buyers. Treat it as suggestive, not confirmed.

The frame nobody leads with is the year. The Bitwise XRP ETF is down 20.52% year to date and down 27.38% over one year. August was strong, with the fund up 18.27% over one week and 37.87% over one month, but a rally sitting on top of a much weaker twelve months is not the same as a trend change.

Does a Seven-Month Inflow High Mean the Bottom Is In?

Our view is no, not on this evidence. One quiet-baseline record and a forced-selling episode do not amount to a demand shift, and the wrapper is still selling off as this publishes. Two checkable conditions would change that read. On flows: multiple consecutive weeks of net XRP ETF inflows meaningfully above the recent run-rate, not a single session. On price: a daily close by the token above the $1.66 resistance that traders are watching, with the Bitwise XRP ETF holding above its Aug. 27 close of $16.31 rather than fading from it. Absent both, the $28 million inflow is a data point, not a turn. This is not investment advice.
