Gold ETFs after recent correction: What to consider before investing

    October 29, 2026

Gold ETFs attracted net inflows of ₹4,450.61 crore in September, up 71.4% from ₹2,596.70 crore in August, even as domestic spot gold prices fell nearly 5%. The inflows highlight continued investor interest in gold, but do not necessarily indicate that prices have bottomed out.

Gold ETFs received ₹45,925.15 crore in net inflows in the first nine months of 2026, exceeding the ₹42,961.44 crore mobilised during the whole of 2025, according to monthly industry data.

For investors considering gold ETFs after the recent correction, the key question is whether gold fits their portfolio allocation and investment horizon, rather than whether prices have hit their lowest level.

How much gold should investors hold?

Gold can help diversify a portfolio, particularly during periods of equity-market weakness and geopolitical uncertainty. However, it does not generate interest or dividends, and prices remain vulnerable to factors such as a stronger US dollar and rising real interest rates.

Paramdeep Singh, founder of Long Tail Ventures and a financial adviser, said investors should determine their gold allocation based on their financial goals, risk appetite and existing investments rather than short-term price movements.

Singh suggested that investors could consider allocating around 5–10% of their portfolio to gold and building exposure gradually through low-cost ETFs with minimal tracking differences. The appropriate allocation would depend on individual circumstances, including existing holdings in physical gold.

    Gold ETFs versus gold fund-of-funds

Restrictions on fresh investments in certain gold fund-of-funds (FoFs) have also raised questions about access to gold-linked investments.

Alekh Yadav, head of investment products at Sanctum Wealth, said the restrictions appeared to be linked to macroeconomic considerations. Gold FoFs invest in gold ETFs, and additional demand can lead to purchases of physical gold, potentially increasing imports and pressure on foreign exchange reserves and the rupee.

Gold ETFs continue to trade on stock exchanges. However, investors need a demat and trading account and should check the ETF’s market price against its indicative net asset value (iNAV). Strong demand or limited unit availability can cause an ETF to trade at a premium to the value of its underlying gold.

Direct ETFs also involve brokerage and other applicable transaction costs, while systematic investment plans and withdrawals may be less convenient than through mutual fund schemes.

    Should investors buy the dip?

Vedant Gupte, co-founder and CEO of investment platform Trackk, said the recent correction could offer investors an opportunity to build gold exposure gradually rather than wait for the perfect entry point.

However, a lower price does not guarantee further gains. Investors should assess their existing exposure, investment horizon and desired allocation before committing fresh money. They should also compare ETF costs, liquidity, tracking differences and market prices relative to iNAV.

The decision to invest in gold should ultimately be guided by its role in the overall portfolio, not just the recent price correction or strong inflows.
