Oracle Bonds Are Sliding as AI Debt Worries Grow. At 62, She Discovers the “Safe” Side of Her 401(k) Can Lose Money Too

    October 27, 2026

    Quick Read

    • Oracle’s investment-grade bonds now carry a 263 basis point spread over Treasuries, wider than the average BB-rated junk bond, as AI debt fears grow.

    • Bond funds can lose value without any defaults: a $100,000 position with 6-year duration loses roughly $4,920 when yields rise just 0.82 percentage points.

    • Near-retirees should check their fund’s top issuers, convert duration into dollar risk, and consider short-term or stable-value funds for money needed soon.

    • The biggest 401k decisions tend to get made once and never revisited: when to roll it over, what to hold inside it, and when to start taking money out. That is exactly what the report: 401k & IRA Tips and Answers was created to address, and it is free today. Read more here. (Sponsor)

Picture a 62-year-old with $100,000 of her 401(k) parked in an intermediate bond fund. She thinks of it as the steady part of her retirement savings, the money that won’t swing with every market headline. Then comes the reality check about Oracle’s bonds, calling that sense of security into question.

A worried-looking middle-aged couple sits on a grey couch in a living room. The woman on the left, with grey hair and a light blue shirt, holds several white financial documents with both hands, her eyes wide with concern. The man on the right, with grey hair and a beard, wears an olive green shirt and brown pants, holding a white calculator in his left hand while gesturing with his right, mirroring the woman's troubled expression. A silver laptop is open on a white coffee table in front of them, along with notebooks and pens. A bookshelf filled with books is visible in the blurred background, and a plant and lamp are to the far left.

Oracle’s Bond Spreads Now Exceed Those of Average BB-Rated Debt

Oracle’s (NYSE: ORCL) investment-grade bonds have come under pressure as investors question the borrowing needed to bankroll AI expansion. According to BondTerminal, the spread on Oracle’s 4.95% bonds due in 2031 stood at 263 basis points over government debt on Oct. 23. Reuters also reported that the cost of insuring Oracle debt against default had climbed to 288 basis points on Oct. 15, reflecting growing concern among lenders.

A spread is the extra yield lenders demand to own one company’s bonds instead of Treasuries. Oracle still holds an investment-grade rating. Even so, the Journal pointed to Bloomberg data showing that double-B bonds, the tier just below investment grade, averaged a spread of only 2.06 percentage points. In this comparison, Oracle’s bonds carry a wider spread than the average BB-rated bond, despite its higher credit rating.

For many Americans, funding a 401(k) only leads to more retirement questions. Should you roll your 401k into an IRA, and when? What’s the tax impact if the rollover check gets made out to the wrong name? When do required withdrawals begin, and how much do you have to take?

Fisher Investments put the answers in one place. 401k & IRA Tips and Answers is free, and it covers rollovers, contribution limits, required withdrawals, and what actually belongs inside the account once the balance gets serious. Read More Here ›

Investors told the Wall Street Journal they worry about future demand for AI computing and about how many more AI bonds are coming. Bonds from SpaceX and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) widened as well. For background, Oracle said in February it planned to raise $45 billion to $50 billion in 2026, with about half coming from a single investment-grade bond sale and half from equity.

Oracle’s latest quarter shows why lenders are conservative. Capital spending hit $28.5 billion, pushing free cash flow to negative $5.4 billion, while interest expense rose 55%. Shares are down 34% this year.

Two Forces That Shrink a Bond Fund With Zero Defaults

Bond funds face two major risks. Credit spreads reflect the extra yield investors demand for taking on an issuer’s risk, while interest-rate risk comes from changes in market yields. Either can push existing bond prices lower without a single default. Duration helps measure how sensitive those prices are to changes in yields.

Duration turns that into napkin math. As an illustration only, $100,000 in bonds with a 6-year duration would lose roughly $6,000 if yields rose one percentage point, all else equal. That figure is a teaching example, separate from her actual loss.

Rising Treasury yields have added pressure this year. The 10-year yield ended 2025 at 4.18% and reached 5.00% on Oct. 26. If her fund’s yields had climbed by that same 0.82 percentage point, the six-year duration illustration would suggest a roughly $4,920 price decline before interest income. Her actual return would depend on the fund’s holdings, changing credit spreads and other factors.

How Much One Issuer Can Move Her Balance

A single issuer affects a diversified fund in proportion to its exposure. Suppose Oracle accounted for 1% of her fund, or $1,000 of her $100,000 balance. If those bonds had a six-year spread duration, a full percentage-point widening in Oracle’s credit spread would erase roughly $60 in market value.

Her larger exposure is cumulative. Many broad bond indexes weight securities by their market value, which often gives heavily indebted companies a larger presence as they borrow more. Combine several of those issuers on top of rate sensitivity she has never measured, and the fund she thought was frozen starts to shift.

Timing makes this matter at 62. If she needs to sell bond-fund shares to cover retirement withdrawals during a downturn, she could lock in losses before prices recover. That’s one form of sequence-of-returns risk, and we walked through how to defend those first few years of withdrawals in a free guide here.

Three Checks to Run Before Your Next Withdrawal

    1. Check the fund’s holdings and credit breakdown. Look for its largest issuers and the share of bonds rated BBB, the lowest investment-grade tier. A concentration of heavily indebted technology companies could make the fund more sensitive to headlines like Oracle’s.

    2. Convert duration into dollars. Multiply your bond balance by the fund’s duration and divide by 100 to estimate the price decline from a one-percentage-point rise in yields. Compare that potential loss with your upcoming spending needs before deciding how much rate risk you can afford.

    3. Scan the plan menu for shorter options. Short-term bond funds and stable-value options may offer less price volatility. TIPS funds provide inflation protection but can still lose value when real yields rise. Money earmarked for near-term spending deserves investments that limit the risk of having to sell at a loss.

Once she knows her fund’s duration and top issuers, the next Oracle development stops being a surprise and becomes a number she has already budgeted for.
