Poll shows support for California climate bond at 59%

    July 19, 2024

SACRAMENTO, California — A majority of Californians say they would vote for the $10 billion climate bond heading to the ballot in November, according to new polling by the Public Policy Institute of California released Wednesday.

The polling found that 59 percent of likely voters would approve a $10 billion bond to pay for flood protection and climate resiliency projects. That’s down from the 65 percent that PPIC found a year ago would support a $6 billion climate bond.

Why this matters: Lawmakers, environmental groups and water agencies who are backing the climate bond supporters are getting ready to fundraise and start campaigning after the Legislature voted earlier this month to place it on the November ballot. The bond, known as Proposition 4, would borrow $10 billion to pay for water resilience, wildfire response and clean energy programs.

More details: The PPIC surveyed 1,648 California adult residents in English and Spanish from June 24 to July 2. Its results come with a margin of error of 3.2 percent.
