    Pourquoi les kangourous sautent-ils ? De scientifiques ont peut-être trouvé une piste

    Les chercheurs, dont les travaux ont été publiés jeudi dans la revue scientifique Australian Mammalogy, pensent avoir décelé un indice chez le kangourou-rat musqué, un marsupial d’une vingtaine de centimètres de long, lointain cousin des kangourous et vivant dans les forêts humides d’Australie.

    Un kangourou qui ne saute pas comme les autres

    Cet animal est le seul de la famille des macropodidés (dont font partie les kangourous et les wallabies) à ne pas s’adonner aux bonds, rappelle la chercheuse Amy Tschirn. « En tant que seul macropodidé qui ne saute pas, le kangourou-rat musqué apporte un éclairage déterminant pour savoir comment et quand l’emblématique moyen de locomotion par le bond a évolué en Australie », exposent les chercheurs.

    Ces scientifiques ont suivi la trace de ces petits mammifères à travers les forêts humides de l’extrême nord de l’État du Queensland.

    Ils ont pu observer que ces quadrupèdes se déplaçaient en sautillant certes grâce à leurs pattes arrière mais, précision importante, en gardant leurs pattes avant au sol. Cette découverte suggère l’existence d’une étape au cours de l’évolution, entre la marche à quatre pattes et le déplacement par bonds sur deux pattes, expliquent les chercheurs.
