3 Dividend ETFs That Deliver More Power as a Combined Portfolio

    October 19, 2026

As a general rule, more stocks or ETFs doesn’t necessarily make a portfolio diversified. With so much of the S&P 500 being top-heavy and overweight in mega-cap tech companies, adding a growth or semiconductor ETF to a core S&P 500 fund doesn’t do much to actually spread out risk or exposure.

The same principle applies to dividend ETFs. You shouldn’t choose only higher yielding funds, nor should you just load up on the latest top performers. You need to understand what the fund’s target market is before matching it up with different strategies to give you a more comprehensive and diversified portfolio.

With so many choices in this space, it’s actually pretty easy to cover all three dividend investing pillars — dividend growth, dividend quality, and high yield — with just a few ETFs. If you’re building out the dividend equity segment of your portfolio, here are three solid dividend ETFs that actually work better together than they do individually.

SCHD: The quality high yield ETF

The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is one of the most popular funds in this category and for good reason. It’s enjoyed a renaissance in 2026 by gaining more than 27% year-to-date and has an average annual return of more than 13% over the past decade.

But it’s the portfolio construction process that makes it so appealing. It considers the dividend growth, dividend quality, and yield factors in choosing the roughly 100 stocks it targets. You don’t end up getting most of the popular tech stocks of the moment but you do end up getting a portfolio of high quality, durable companies that can withstand challenging economic conditions and continuing growing over time.

Its 3.3% yield is more than triple that of the S&P 500 right now and it’s managed to increase its annual dividend every year since its inception in 2011. If you were to own only one dividend ETF in your portfolio, this one might be it. But there are still ways to add around it.

    VIG: The dividend growth ETF

The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSEMKT: VIG) is built like a traditional dividend growth fund. It includes U.S. large-cap stocks with at least 10 consecutive years of annual dividend growth and then market cap weights those stocks that qualify. But it’s unique in that it unintentionally has pretty strong growth profile too.

Since there’s no yield qualifier for inclusion (outside of the fact that the top 25% of yields are excluded off the top), low-yielding stocks can receive large weightings. Take, for instance, the fact that Microsoft, Apple, and Broadcom are the top three holdings with a combined weight of around 14%. Roughly 27% of the fund overall is tech stocks, so the fund becomes much more of a balance between growth and income.

That’s why it pairs well with the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF. If you combine its defensive profile with a growth-tilted Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF, you cover more of the full dividend stock universe.

    VYMI: The international dividend ETF

You can often find higher dividend yields overseas than you can here in the United States. The Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF (NASDAQ: VYMI), for example, has a dividend yield of 3.2%. That’s a full 1% higher than the 2.2% yield of its U.S. counterpart, the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF, that uses substantially the same strategy.

This fund is a pure high yield strategy, but it’s the international diversification that’s also a key feature. On the high yield side specifically, international dividend payers have outperformed U.S. dividend stocks over the past five years with comparable risk levels. The sector compositions are also fairly different, especially the 40%+ allocation to financials in the Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF.

The bottom line is that diversifying internationally has delivered better risk-adjusted returns overall over the past several years.

3 dividend ETFs that work great together

With just these three ETFs, you cover each important segment of the dividend stock universe multiple times. The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF gives you quality and yield. The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF gives you quality and dividend growth. The Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF gives you yield and overseas diversification.

It’s a trio where the sum total really is greater than its individual parts.
