Ethereum ETFs Saw Outflows Three Days Running After a $690 Million Week. Is Fund Demand Drying Up?

    October 3, 2026

Ethereum ETFs pulled in $690 million one week, then sent investors rushing for the exits the next. Whether that reversal signals a deeper shift in appetite or just routine quarter-end shuffling could reshape how crypto funds compete heading into Q4.

Recently, U.S. spot Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) ETFs experienced a significant week, bringing in $690 million during the week of September 21, 2026. However, this positive trend quickly reversed, leading to Ethereum ETF outflows for three consecutive trading days. From September 29 to October 1, investors withdrew approximately $118 million from these funds, according to data from SoSoValue.

These Ethereum ETFs let investors hold Ethereum in conventional brokerage accounts, making their inflow and outflow data crucial for understanding ongoing demand. Notably, the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (NASDAQ: ETHA) led the influx with $326 million, while the Fidelity Ethereum Fund (CBOE: FETH) added another $174 million. This raises the question: Is the demand for Ethereum funds starting to dry up?

The buying streak lasted until September 28, when the 11 U.S. spot Ethereum funds attracted an additional $17 million, primarily into ETHA. This extended their inflow streak to seven trading days.

However, the tide soon turned. On September 29, investors pulled back about $3 million, followed by a steep withdrawal of $60 million on September 30, and another $55 million on October 1, indicating a much larger exit during the latter days. Notably, Fidelity’s fund led the outflows on October 1 with around $24 million, while Grayscale’s Ethereum Mini Trust was the only fund to see an inflow, receiving about $2 million.

Outflows occur when large dealers return shares to a fund, which then cancels those shares and releases the underlying Ethereum. This pattern resembles an earlier episode in September, when Ethereum ETFs saw a $24 million outflow immediately after a robust $824 million week.

Quarter-End Selling Explains Only Part of the Ethereum ETF Outflows

September 30 marked the final trading day of the third quarter, a time when pension funds, advisors, and model portfolios typically rebalance their investments. If an asset grows beyond its targeted share, they often trim that holding. Ethereum gained about 57% in the third quarter, outperforming both Bitcoin and Solana, making it an attractive choice to trim as the new quarter begins.

However, the selling trend continued even after the quarter closed. Ethereum funds saw another $55 million in outflows on October 1, whereas spot Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) funds attracted about $103 million that same day, following a remarkable $2.4 billion week at the end of September.

During the four-day period from September 28 to October 1, Bitcoin funds recorded about $51 million in inflows, while Ethereum funds experienced net outflows of $101 million. This disparity suggests investors are moving money specifically out of Ethereum funds, rather than withdrawing from cryptocurrency funds overall. It also marks a shift from early September, when Ethereum funds posted stronger net inflows than Bitcoin funds in 2026.

Ethereum ETFs Still Hold $17.7 Billion, More Than Investors Put In

Despite recent outflows, Ethereum ETFs still collectively hold around $17.7 billion, about 5.4% of Ethereum’s total market value. Since their launch, investors have put a net total of $13.8 billion into these funds, meaning the Ethereum they currently hold is worth more than the actual cash investors have contributed.

The three days of outflows did little to impact the overall numbers. Total net inflow fell by about $120 million between September 28 and October 1, a decline of less than 1%. The $118 million withdrawn also represents less than a fifth of the $690 million that came in the previous week.

Do the Ethereum ETF Outflows Mean Fund Demand Is Drying Up?

While recent outflows suggest cooling demand for Ethereum, they do not indicate a complete drying up. The three-day withdrawal returned less than a fifth of the previous week’s strong inflows, and the funds still manage to retain $17.7 billion in assets. However, the trend suggests ETF buyers are moving away from Ethereum while continuing to add to Bitcoin funds, slowing one of Ethereum’s key sources of demand.

The upcoming week ending October 9 could provide further clarity. If Ethereum funds post another week of net outflows and total net inflow dips below $13.8 billion, it could signal that investors are exiting rather than just rebalancing. Conversely, if inflows return, particularly driven by ETHA, the recent outflows may simply be a short pause in what has been a strong run of inflows.
