Bloomington receives federal funds to continue road project

    August 22, 2024

BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – City leaders met with Congressman Darin LaHood Thursday morning to discuss an ongoing road project in Bloomington.

Through efforts made by Congressman LaHood, the city received $2 million in federal funds to expand the Hamilton Road Project. Bloomington aims to improve roughly half a mile of road from Morrissey to Bunn Street.

One of the goals of the project is to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Bloomington City Engineer Kevin Kothe said the changes will help pedestrians have an easier, safer time getting around.

“The new railroad crossing will have all modern gates and so forth,” Kothe said. “The Constitution Trail which extends through this project will come across the railroad tracks with pedestrian gates, so we’ll have the full safety features for it as well.”

Bloomington Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe said he is grateful those in Congress see the value in this project, and that it should also help to ease congestion in the city, while also making room for growth in the community.

“In this project, we’re closing some pretty dangerous areas, like Rhodes Lane and Morrisey. Rhodes Lane will become a cul-de-sac. You’ll also have some opportunities for economic development along this corridor,” Mwilambwe said.

With the newly received federal funds, the amount invested in the project is close to $22 million. Construction is currently slated to begin next year and be finished by 2026.
