Lincoln County Historical Museum raising funds to add Canteen exhibit expansion

    October 16, 2024

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The Lincoln County Museum has begun raising funds for an expansion, which will specifically focus on the North Platte Canteen. The Lincoln County Museum has begun raising funds for an expansion, which will specifically focus on the North Platte Canteen.

“We‘re planning an expansion that will house the Canteen exhibit permanently. It will also tell the story of rural America through World War II and through the lens of locals. We’re also adding a small theater that we can show a Canteen film in as well as do humanities programming in,” Griffin said.

The exhibit room itself will look exactly like the Canteen did. The goal is to have it look as though you are walking directly into the Canteen lunch room when you enter the front doors.

“You’re also going to see plans for a 1941 Plymouth that we are going to have exhibited as if you’re a Canteen worker coming to work at the Canteen. People can see what people had to do to do that,” Griffin said.

The exhibit is meant to capture the attention of all ages by explaining an important part of North Platte history in an interactive way.

“We really want it to be hands-on as well as immersive. We have plans for interactive exhibits so that you can interact with Canteen ladies and things like that,” Griffin said.

You can learn more about the expansion or donate here.
