Wheeling City Council approves over $1 million in HUD funds for local nonprofits

    October 16, 2024

WHEELING, W.Va. — At Tuesday’s Wheeling City Council meeting, an ordinance was passed to expand funds to CDBG after receiving more than $1 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Community Development Block Grant will give thousands of dollars’ worth of funding to several non-profit organizations throughout the city.

This includes $10,000 to Catholic Charities for food and containers, $25,000 to Wheeling Health Right for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, and $10,000 to The Soup Kitchen for food. Seven other organizations will also receive funding.

“I think it’s really important to work with the nonprofits,” Community Development Director Nancy Prager said. “One, they do a very good job at what they do for their clientele. And two, it shows city support, which means when they go for other grant funds or other state funds. It shows they have the support of the city and that helps them win points on other grant opportunities “

The organizations will be able to start spending the money once the agreement is signed Wednesday.
