    Over a quarter of equity mutual funds surpass benchmarks in January: Here’s how each category fared

    A study by PL Wealth Management, the wealth management arm of PL Capital – Prabhudas Lilladher, found that 26.12% of equity mutual funds outperformed their respective benchmarks in January 2025.

    The analysis, based on 291 open-ended equity diversified funds, reported that 76 schemes outperformed their benchmarks over the past month, ending January 31, 2025.

    The study highlighted that the total assets under management (AUM) of equity mutual funds, excluding sectoral and thematic funds, declined by 3.83% sequentially.

    AUM dropped to ₹24.85 lakh crore in January 2025 from ₹25.84 lakh crore in December 2024.

    Small Cap Funds emerged as the best-performing category, with 86.21% of schemes outperforming their benchmarks.

    Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) and Focused Funds followed, with outperformance rates of 31.71% and 28.57%, respectively.

    Large Cap Funds were the weakest category, with 0% of schemes outperforming the benchmark.

    • Small Cap Funds: 25 out of 29 schemes outperformed, achieving the highest success rate at 86.21%.
    • Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS): 13 out of 41 schemes outperformed, showing 31.71% success.
    • Focused Funds: 8 out of 28 schemes outperformed, with a 28.57% success rate.
    • Flexi Cap Funds: 9 out of 39 schemes outperformed, achieving 23.08%.
    • Large Cap Funds: None of the 32 schemes outperformed, making it the weakest category.
