The latest data shows that new mutual fund SIP registrations outnumbered SIPs that were either stopped or completed their existing tenure.
The number of SIPs discontinued/ tenure completed in August were recorded at 53.82 lakh whereas the number of new SIPs registered in the same period stood at 66.40 lakh. On the other hand, the number of SIPs discontinued/tenure completed in July was recorded at 50.30 lakh and the number of new SIPs registered was 61.44 lakh.

What does SIP stoppage ratio mean?
The SIP stoppage ratio is the number of discontinued SIPs compared to the number of new registered SIPs. If this ratio crosses 100% then it indicates that more mutual fund SIPs are being stopped than the ones started.
However, one must keep in mind that stoppage ratio also includes those SIPs that have expired. Besides, investors may have simply switched from one SIP to another as part of their portfolio reshuffle.Mutual fund SIP inflows rose marginally month-on-month to a record high of Rs 32,297 crore in August, compared with Rs 31,961 crore in July. On a year-on-year basis, SIP inflows increased 14% from Rs 28,265 crore recorded in August 2025.
“The Indian MF industry’s AUM grew 1.5% on-month to Rs 87.08 lakh crore in August, driven by a combination of sustained investor inflows and market appreciation. Notably, equity MFs saw inflows of Rs 29,329 crore, marking a 66th consecutive month of inflows. The growth momentum was further reinforced by robust SIP contributions of Rs 32,297 crore during the month,” said Venkat Chalasani, Chief Executive, AMFI.
“Investor confidence in mutual funds as a disciplined and long-term wealth creation vehicle continues to strengthen, as reflected in the crossing of a significant milestone of 10.02 crore SIP accounts.”
The number of contributing SIP accounts stood at 10,01,78,903 in Aug 2026. SIP assets stood at Rs 18,61,652.14 crore in Aug 2026, rose by 2.8% constituting 21.4% of the industry’s AUM.
The retail MF AUM (Equity + Hybrid + Solution Oriented Schemes) stood at Rs 51,72,576 crore for the month of Aug 2026 as against Rs 50,68,667 in July 2026. The retail folios (Equity + Hybrid + Solution Oriented Schemes) are at 21,62,19,837 for Aug 2026 and 21,39,96,603 for July 2026.
Saugata Chatterjee, President and Deputy CEO, Nippon India Mutual Fund said record-high SIP contributions, along with a moderating stoppage ratio, further demonstrate the growing discipline of Indian investors.
August 2026 extended a trend we have seen for some time now as SIP inflows climbed to a record high even as the market remained volatile on global cues, said Navneet Munot, MD and CEO of HDFC AMC.
