The Dream Inn In Santa Cruz, California

    October 28, 2024

Growing up as a kid on the East Coast in the ’80s, my perception of California was shaped by stereotypes that painted a vivid picture in my mind—Los Angeles shimmering under the golden sun, sun-drenched beaches stretching endlessly, and surfers exclaiming “tubular” as they rode the waves. This idyllic atmosphere evoked a sense of carefree enjoyment, characterized by sunsets and the sounds of laughter echoing along the shoreline. This enchanting vision of California continues to resonate with many, embodying a timeless sense of freedom and adventure. It’s this very experience that awaits you at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, CA

This iconic hotel stands as a beacon of the laid-back luxury inherent to the Californian lifestyle, exuding a charm that captivates visitors from all walks of life. With its breathtaking oceanfront views, elegantly designed rooms, and inviting pool area, the Dream Inn serves as an irresistible destination for those seeking not only sun and surf but also a taste of history and culture. Whether lounging on the beach, exploring local boutiques, or savoring delicious meals at nearby restaurants, the Dream Inn provides the perfect base for a memorable getaway infused with the vibrant spirit of California.

This is California—why would you want to be indoors when you can soak up the sun? Head down to the pool and work on your “summer color” almost year-round, enjoying the warm, inviting weather that makes this place so special. Whether you’re scurrying to find the perfect chair to bask in maximum sunlight or coming up from Cowell Beach after surfing, make sure to stop by the ShoreBreak Poolside Bar for a delightful treat.

There are two fantastic Happy Hours for adults and even one for kids, ensuring everyone has a great time. Join the Mimosa Happy Hour from 10 AM – 11 AM for a bubbly start to your day, and later, don’t miss the Tequila Happy Hour from 6 PM – 7 PM, perfect for winding down. For the little ones, the Kid’s Ice Cream Happy Hour from 6 PM – 7 PM offers a sweet escape to enjoy some delicious frozen treats.

After dinner, I grabbed a drink and leaned over the edge of the pool, watching the waves crash against the shore while catching a volleyball game at the courts below. I then settled into a chaise lounge near the fire pit, savoring the moonlight’s reflection on the sea.

Executive Chef Gus Trejo for Jack O’Neill Restaurant & Lounge at The Dream Inn

The restaurant’s namesake, Jack O’Neill, is a legendary figure in the surfing community. In the 1950s, he opened his first surf shop in a humble garage in San Francisco before moving to Santa Cruz, where he established another store at what is now known as the Dream Inn. This location evolved into a vibrant hub for surfers and the birthplace of his groundbreaking invention—the neoprene wetsuit. This innovation revolutionized surfing, enabling enthusiasts to explore colder waters while propelling the O’Neill brand to international prominence. Jack O’Neill’s legacy is celebrated throughout the restaurant and lounge, adorned with vintage surfboards, historic photographs, and memorabilia that narrate his inspiring story.

Leading the culinary experience at Jack O’Neill Restaurant & Lounge is Executive Chef Gus Trejo, whose commitment to sourcing local ingredients elevates every meal. With a philosophy centered on “savoring the local flavors,” Chef Trejo selects produce from micro farms and fisheries spanning from Big Sur to Pescadero, CA. His focus on sustainability not only delights the palate but also reinforces a dedication to environmental stewardship.

When I arrived I passed the history wall of the Dream Inn, built in 1963, showcasing photos that lead up to its 60th anniversary in 2023. As I walked toward my corner booth, I admired the wraparound views of the boardwalk and beach, spotting surfers attempting to catch their last waves before daybreak. My experience began with the wine list, and I chose to stay local by ordering the Domaine Eden 2019 Chardonnay from Santa Cruz to pair with the Pacific Oysters and Grilled Octopus I selected as appetizers.

In between courses, Executive Chef Trejo and Chef De Cuisine Greg Karjala came out to greet me. Their playful banter could easily serve as entertainment on the Food Network. I remarked, “I’m not sure what’s better, the cuisine or the comedy hour between you two. Is this your first time working together?” Nearly in unison, they replied, “We’ve known each other for a long time.”

While it may not be breaking news, workdays can often be tough. However, they become much more enjoyable with colleagues who bring joy to the experience, which is clearly the case with Gus and Greg. For dinner, I ordered the Short Rib of Beef accompanied by braised greens and butter-whipped potatoes, paired with Soquel Vineyards’ 2022 Pinot Noir from Santa Cruz. Before leaving, I made sure to thank Chef Gus and Chef Greg for an evening filled with exquisite food, engaging conversation, and their support for the Santa Cruz community.
