Vanguard Growth Index Fund Admiral Shares (VIGAX): What Investors Should Know

    August 25, 2026

    Quick Read

    • VIGAX markets itself as a growth index fund, but just four stocks (NVIDIA, Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft) consume 45% of assets.

    • VUG mirrors VIGAX’s identical portfolio at 0.03% with no minimum and delivers better tax efficiency in taxable accounts.

    • VUG returned 404% over 10 years but dropped harder than the S&P 500 in 2022 when growth multiples compressed.

    • Act now: the analyst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and VIGAX didn’t make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.

Four stocks account for roughly 44.6% of Vanguard Growth Index Fund Admiral Shares (VIGAX). If you own this fund, you own a concentrated bet on NVIDIA, Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft, wrapped in an index label. That is the story worth understanding before another dollar goes in.

VIGAX is the Admiral share class of Vanguard’s large-cap growth index fund, tracking the CRSP US Large Cap Growth Index. It is a passive mutual fund with an ETF twin, VUG, and an Investor share class, VIGRX. Because Admiral, Investor, and ETF shares hold the same portfolio, holdings and performance below are drawn from Vanguard’s most recent VUG fact sheet dated June 5, 2026, and VUG’s live price history as of August 24, 2026.

A Growth Index That Is Really a Mega-Cap Tech Fund

The index label understates how top-heavy this portfolio has become. As of June 5, 2026, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) sat at 13.3% of assets, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at 12.3%, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) at 9.9%, and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at 9.1%. Round out the top 10 with Amazon (4.6%), Broadcom (4.4%), Meta (4.1%), Tesla (3.5%), Eli Lilly (2.6%), and Visa (1.7%), and a supposedly diversified index fund becomes something closer to a semiconductor-plus-platforms basket with a healthcare and payments sleeve attached.

On a $100,000 balance, roughly $65,000 is riding on the ten names above. That is the tradeoff investors accept in exchange for owning the growth style at index cost.

Cheap, but the ETF Twin Is Cheaper

VIGAX’s Admiral shares carry Vanguard’s usual $3,000 minimum investment and an expense ratio in single basis points, keeping fee drag near the floor for retail funds. The ETF twin, Vanguard Growth ETF (NYSEARCA:VUG), lists a net expense ratio of 0.03% on its June 5, 2026 fact sheet, and it holds an identical portfolio with no minimum beyond one share. For investors in taxable accounts, the ETF wrapper also tends to distribute fewer capital gains than the mutual fund format. That is a meaningful reason to check whether VUG fits before defaulting to VIGAX.

Performance That Rewards the Concentration, So Far

The strategy has paid off during the mega-cap growth cycle. VUG, which mirrors VIGAX, returned 7.15% year to date, 14.27% over one year, 76.79% over five years, and 404.19% over ten years, all measured through August 24, 2026 on a price-adjusted basis. VUG closed at $86.93 that day, down 2.18% for the week.

The uncomfortable other side of that ledger is 2022. When rising rates repriced long-duration growth stocks, this strategy fell harder than the broad S&P 500 because its portfolio is more tech-heavy and more expensive on valuation. Anyone considering VIGAX should assume a repeat of that dynamic is possible whenever growth multiples compress.

    Real Risks: Concentration and Valuation

Two risks matter more than the others. First, single-stock risk: with NVIDIA alone at 13.3% of assets, a 30% drawdown in one company hits a VIGAX shareholder harder than most “diversified” index owners assume. Second, valuation risk: growth indices weight the most expensive segment of the U.S. market by design. Buyers today are paying premium multiples for the earnings expected to justify them, and much of that premium sits on the AI capex story (we profiled seven suppliers powering that buildout, from power to cooling, in a free report you can grab here). Buyers today are paying those premium multiples for earnings expected to justify them.

    Who VIGAX Actually Suits

Long-horizon investors in tax-advantaged accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s) who already hold a total-market or S&P 500 fund and want to tilt toward growth may find VIGAX worth a look, especially if they can stomach 25%-plus drawdowns without selling. Investors nearing retirement, anyone who already owns heavy positions in mega-cap tech through employer stock, or those in taxable accounts who could use VUG instead have better options.

    Related Funds Worth Researching

    • Vanguard Growth ETF (NYSEARCA:VUG): the ETF twin, same index, 0.03% expense ratio, no minimum, generally more tax-efficient.

    • Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral (VFIAX): a less concentrated, broader U.S. large-cap alternative for investors uneasy about mega-cap growth weightings.

    • Vanguard Value Index Fund Admiral (VVIAX): the natural counterweight, pairing with VIGAX to reduce style risk in either direction.

    • Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ): a Nasdaq-100 ETF for readers who want even more explicit tech concentration than VIGAX offers.
