Three Dividend ETFs, Three Completely Different Portfolios: NOBL, DGRW, VIG Compared

    October 15, 2026

Three ETFs share the same dividend growth label, yet their portfolios look nothing alike. Before you assume you know what any of them owns, check what that label is actually hiding.

This post may contain links from our sponsors and affiliates, and Flywheel Publishing may receive compensation for actions taken through them.

Three well-known ETFs share a dividend growth sales pitch and little else. ProShares says the index behind the ProShares S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF (CBOE:NOBL) admits only S&P 500 companies that have raised dividends for at least 25 years. WisdomTree reports that the largest holding in the WisdomTree U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Fund (NASDAQ:DGRW) is the chip designer NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction), at 8.67% of the fund.

Add the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSEARCA:VIG), whose name signals a dividend appreciation mandate, and you have three funds under one similar banner. For an income investor, that label says almost nothing about what the fund actually owns.

A 25-Year Rule That Bends When Qualifiers Run Short

ProShares’ prospectus says the index is “designed to measure the performance of companies in the S&P 500 Index that have consistently increased dividends each year for at least 25 years.” ProShares adds that the index selects at least 40 companies, weights them equally, and caps any single sector at 30% of the index.

Equal weighting means every stock gets about the same slice of the fund. Company size doesn’t matter, so a mid-sized toolmaker counts as much as a mega-cap.

The prospectus also includes a fallback clause. ProShares states that if fewer than 40 companies have at least 25 consecutive years of dividend growth, or if sector limits are breached, “the Index will include companies with shorter dividend growth histories.” So the headline rule loosens when the market can’t supply enough qualifying companies.

ProShares also discloses that its index holds a significant portion of its value in consumer staples and industrials. As of its SEC filing dated May 31, 2026, NOBL held 69 equity positions and $11.07 billion in net assets.

NVIDIA and Microsoft Top a Fund Sold on Dividends

WisdomTree describes DGRW as applying quality and growth screens to dividend-paying large-cap U.S. companies, tracking the WisdomTree U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Index. As of October 12, 2026, WisdomTree lists NVIDIA at 8.67% and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at 8.05%, with information technology making up 34.12% of the portfolio.

The sectors most investors link to dividends barely show up. As of that date, WisdomTree puts utilities at 0.19% and consumer staples at 6.78%, across total assets of $17.18 billion.

Anyone who bought DGRW expecting old-line dividend payers owns something closer to a large-cap quality fund that happens to require a dividend. The fund does exactly what its methodology says.

Two Yield Figures That Mean Different Things

ProShares lists NOBL’s turnover for the most recent fiscal year at 20% and total annual operating expenses at 0.35%, while WisdomTree lists DGRW’s net expense ratio at 0.28%, distribution yield at 2.06% and SEC 30-day yield at 1.20% as of October 12, 2026.

Those two yields measure different things. A distribution yield is based on what the fund recently paid out, so a single large payment can push it up. The SEC 30-day yield uses a standard formula built on the past month’s income after expenses, which lets you compare funds on equal terms. Treating one as the other can give you the wrong idea of how much income to expect.

For VIG’s cost and yield, Vanguard’s prospectus spells out its specific criteria and fees.

Strictest Dividend Rule, Weakest Price Returns

Cumulative price returns as of October 13, 2026:

    Window NOBL DGRW VIG
    Year-to-date 8.2% 11.87% 10.23%
    One year 11.88% 15.46% 14.41%
    Five years 36.82% 80.8% 67.8%
    Ten years 160.49% 279.71% 250.86%

NOBL trails both peers in every window, and the gap widens as the window gets longer. Over ten years, NOBL’s price rose 160.49% against 279.71% for DGRW. That pattern fits the structural differences above. Price data alone can’t show that the streak rule caused it.

ProShares’ Own Benchmark Lagged the S&P 500

ProShares’ prospectus reports average annual total returns, which include dividends, for the ten years ended December 31, 2025. ProShares discloses that the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index returned 10.48% a year over that stretch, compared with 14.81% for the S&P 500.

Those are index figures for a period that ended last December. They are separate from the fund price returns in the table above.

Read the Holdings Before the Label

“Dividend growth” is a marketing category. NOBL and DGRW both carry it while owning very different portfolios. The only reliable way to know what a dividend fund holds is to read its methodology, then check its top holdings and sector weights.

Each issuer’s next holdings update will show whether these three portfolios move further apart.
