Staff from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are set to take to the skies to fall from 10,000 feet. They will perform a daring sky dive to raise much-needed funds for the Trust’s official charity.

The group, who work at the hospital’s mental health inpatient units for both adults and young people, hope to generate money to improve patient experience across the Trust’s wards. Health Stars, the chosen charity, aims to promote good health, emotional wellbeing and prevent illness to allow young people to reach their full potential.

Emily Wood is the Clinical Effectiveness Lead at Inspire, the Trust’s nine bed CAMHS General Adolescent Unit (GAU) supporting young people aged 13 -17, with severe and acute mental health needs, including eating disorders that cannot be managed within the community. She said: “There are nine very brave members of the Inspire team taking part, I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

She also spoke of the worthwhile endeavour, despite there being nerves. She said: “There are a few nerves but knowing we are doing this to make the outdoor space for our patients and families more welcoming and calming makes it all worthwhile.”

Of the nine taking part, non-executive director Priyanka Perera explained that this “is more than a thrill-seeking adventure,” adding “it’s about making meaningful change.” She added: “I am so humbled by friends and family who have supported my effort from places as far away as Australia Singapore and New Zealand. Every pound we raise will go directly into improving patient care across the Trust.”

A £4,000 goal has been set by the team behind the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Miranda House, with £655 raised so far ahead of the sky dive which takes place on September 6. Individual members taking part in the stunt have created their own fundraisers, with all proceeds going towards Health Stars.

“It’s amazing to see so many staff willing to take on this challenge. I think it highlights the dedication of teams across the Trust to ensuring that patients receive the very best care,” Health Stars charity manager, Anita Green said. Emily, Priyanka and Bethany Williamson are raising money to create a more enriching and enjoyable atmosphere for patients at Mill View Lodge, and are three of the staff members to create fundraisers, so far raising a combined £4,748 between them, which, when added to the PICU fund, amounts to £5,403.
