Bengal Bandh Live: Police detains protesting BJP workers in Kolkata, Suvendu Adhikari joins the protest
Daily life was somewhat affected in parts of West Bengal due to a 12-hour shutdown called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in protest against the police action against demonstrators during a march to the state secretariat. In Kolkata, the usual busyness on the roads on a weekday morning was missing with a lesser number of buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis plying. Private vehicles were also significantly less in numbers, even as markets and shops remained open as usual.
The BJP called for a bandh after protestors, aiming to reach the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, fought pitched battles with the police at multiple stoppage points on August 27. The violence led to several injuries on both sides with senior police officers and women protestors among those who were hurt. More than 200 people were arrested from across the state.

Waqf Bill, Broadcast Bill and Lateral Entry — Is Modi 3.0 responding well to the pressure with many U-turns
Four decisions by PM Modi Government 3.0 since assuming office in June this year indicates a departure from its business as usual. First the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance agreed to refer the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to a parliamentary panel; then announced decision to pull back the controversial Broadcasting Bill; later annulled its order on lateral entry into government service; and, last week rolled out the Universal Pension Scheme.
On each of these issues, there is an ongoing conversation among sections of the society with the Opposition working collectively and whipping each as a hot-button issue. The Waqf Bill led to apprehension of centralised control of such properties; shrinking space and curb on free speech on digital space; questioning the lack of affirmative action in direct recruitment; and, rolling the political dice on pensions that titled a few assembly elections towards the opposition.

Why RG Kar rape and murder case is the toughest challenge Mamata Banerjee faced during her CM tenure
The tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College have plunged West Bengal into a crisis that may be Mamata Banerjee’s most formidable challenge since she came to power in 2011. This time, the outcry isn’t from political opponents but from common citizens, marking the first time such widespread anti-Mamata protests have erupted without political backing.
This tragedy strikes at the heart of Banerjee’s support base, particularly among women, who have previously stood by her despite other law and order controversies. The spontaneous and organic protests signal deepening discontent that cannot be easily dismissed. What makes this situation more alarming is that these protests are not orchestrated by opposition parties but by ordinary citizens who feel let down by the administration’s response to the crime.
