Big changes are on the horizon for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. This week, the airport received over $30 million in grant money from the Federal Aviation Administration which will go towards construction on a new terminal.
“This funding will aid us in delivering that bigger, better AUS experience,” said ABIA spokesperson Kimmie Hey.
This money is part of the FAA’s bipartisan Infrastructure Law Grant Award. ABIA says it plans to use that money towards its massive Concourse B Project.
“AUS was awarded 33.27 million dollars from the FAA,” said Hey.
Hey called it “extremely exciting” to receive the funds.
“Especially now that we’re seeing 20 million passengers come through AUS,” she said.
It’s part of the major changes the airport is already making under the “Journey with AUS” program.
“We’ve had several different milestones, such as the Millfield, Midfield Taxiway groundbreaking,” said Hey. “We’ve seen beam structures go up for both our Westgate project and our West Enfield project.”
The new concourse, which will begin hard construction in 2027, will offer more space to accommodate the growing traffic at the airport.
“We really need to build a bigger and better infrastructure space to meet the demands of our passengers,” said Hey.
The new concourse will also create more jobs at the airport through restaurants. The biggest change, quite literally, will be even better prices.
“With the airlines, that means that ultimately more gates and more flights, it equals cheaper fares and shorter wait times for Austinites,” she said.
Hey says they expect completion of the new Concourse B by 2030. The FAA awarded over $970 million to 114 airports across the country.
