SBI Fund Management Ltd. (SBFM), India’s largest asset manager, debuted with a 6% premium over issue price, aspiring to be the market leader, signalling market expansion using the bank’s distribution muscle.

The stock was listed at ₹613 per share, which is a 6% listing premium over the offer price of ₹574 a share. The stock then settled 0.6% below the opening price at ₹610 a piece on July 21, 2026.

Addressing the media after the ceremonial bell ringing ceremony of the ₹9813 crore IPO, Debasish Mishra, MD and CEO of SBFM, said, “Of India’s 140 crore population, the investment portfolio is just about 10 crore, and the newly listed company would like to bring another 100 million in five years’ time to this whole investment world.”

Of the nearly 53 crore SBI customers, just 5.5 lakh invest in SBI’s mutual fund, giving a large headroom to expand. While this is an expansion opportunity, it also has the potential for SBI to cross-sell mutual fund schemes to its banking customers.

The Finance Minister of India has constantly pressed that banks should stick to the core business of lending and flagged potential misselling. On this, Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, chairperson of SBI, said the penetration levels of bank customers across (investment) products are low and “they would like to make the products available without using the core business.” However, he further added that SBI would limit itself to selling products of its subsidiaries alone.

The bank also plans to expand its wealth management business to reach 14 lakh customers in 2030.

The challenge to SBFM’s expansion continues to be the small number of fund managers and looks to develop or expand the current team.
